Why a Dry Climate Does Not Dry Your Building Faster
Los Angeles air is dry and the building is sealed, insulated, and full of dense material. Outdoor humidity is barely part of the equation.

What actually drives drying
Water moves from wet material into air when the vapor pressure in the material exceeds that of the surrounding air. Outdoor conditions only matter to the extent that outdoor air is actually reaching the wet material, and inside a closed building it largely is not.
A modern or well-sealed building exchanges very little air with outside. The relevant humidity is whatever exists in the affected space, and once evaporation begins that air becomes saturated quickly unless something removes the moisture. This is precisely why a dehumidifier does the work and fans only assist.
The coastal complication
Los Angeles is not uniformly dry. The marine layer pushes genuinely humid air across the western side of the basin through much of late spring and early summer, and morning dew points near the coast can be high enough that opening windows actively slows a drying job.
The inland valleys behave differently again, and a single day can swing enormously between morning and afternoon. Relying on outdoor air means relying on a variable nobody controls, which is why controlled drying keeps the building closed and manages the interior conditions instead.
Materials, which do not care about the forecast
Concrete, plaster, and dense hardwood release moisture slowly regardless of ambient conditions. A slab that absorbed water gives it up over days because the moisture has to migrate through the material to reach a surface before it can evaporate at all.
Assemblies matter as much as materials. Water inside a wall cavity, under a floor, or between storeys has no exposure to room air whatsoever, and the driest day in the calendar does nothing for it. Reaching those spaces is why controlled openings get made.
Insulation is the worst case: it holds water against framing, has no useful evaporative surface, and is generally removed rather than dried.
Drying too fast has its own failures
Aggressive drying is not automatically better. Wood that dries very quickly at the surface while remaining wet inside can check, split, or warp, and a hardwood floor dried hard from above will crown later.
Plaster and some historic materials react badly to rapid moisture loss as well. Controlled drying means managing the rate, not maximizing it, which is another reason the process is monitored rather than simply left running.
What this means for a job at your building
The schedule comes from readings rather than from weather. Materials get measured daily against unaffected areas of the same structure, and the equipment stays until they agree.
Opening windows because it is a beautiful day is the most common way homeowners extend their own drying job, particularly near the coast in June. Keeping the building closed and conditioned is doing something, even when it feels like doing nothing.
Asking the right question
Rather than asking whether it will be dry by the weekend, ask what the current readings are, what the target is, and how it was set. Those three answers tell you where the job actually stands.
Any restorer should produce them without hesitation, and the answer should reference your building rather than a general standard.
Air conditioning is not dehumidification
A running air conditioner does remove some moisture as a by-product of cooling, which leads people to assume it will handle a wet building. It will not. Its capacity to remove water is incidental and it only conditions the air, not the material.
Worse, cooling a space lowers the vapor pressure differential that drives evaporation out of wet material. A cold room can dry more slowly than a warm one, which is the opposite of most people's intuition.
Controlled drying warms the affected space deliberately for that reason, while a dehumidifier removes what evaporates.
Why the fans point where they do
Air movers are aimed along surfaces at a shallow angle rather than straight at them, because the objective is to strip the boundary layer of saturated air that forms against wet material. Pointing a fan directly at a wall is markedly less effective than sweeping air across it.
That is also why moving them without a reason sets the job back. The placement is a plan, not an arrangement.
